Star Tattoo Designs

The star tattoo is one of the most popular tattoo designs that people look for. There are a couple of reasons for this. One of them is the fact that the star design looks great on almost anyone. One of the reasons is that it is a great first tattoo, in most cases it is small and quick to have done. Meaning a less painful tattoo for someone new to them. This is not always the case as there are some very intricate star tattoo designs.

When you are looking to get a star tattoo, you should ask yourself a few questions:
How many points do you want the star to have? You may want to have a 4 or 5 pointed start or even one with 7 or 8 points, this is primarily a personal preference depending on what you feel would look best.
Do you want it to be a solid color or multiple colors? This also plays into the look and feel of the tattoo and also helps it stand out. You can have your tattoo with a solid color, like black, or you can have a few colors to give your tattoo more vibrant.
What is the right size for the star tattoo design? You will want to pick a size that will look best on the area that you want your tattoo to go.
This is only a handful of design aspects that you may need to consider when picking out that perfect tattoo. You may want to add more than just a star, like a shooting star design. Also you may want to consider if you want the star to be part of a larger tattoo that you will be finishing over time.
I have found personally that I like to have a large selection of quality designs to choose from. I also like to be able to go through them from the comfort of my home. This is why I always get my tattoo designs online from a quality design gallery.

Moon Star Tattoos

Ever since humans could look at the sky above at nighttime, they could see the moon and the brilliant stars sprinkled all over the skies. The skies were so much better to look at back then without the contamination of all the lights in our modern society. Imagine how AWESOME and how much brighter and more brilliant all the stars, planets and the Moon appeared back then!

The Moon as we all know is the only natural satellite of our planet. The average distance from Earth is 238,855 miles! Our Moon isn’t the biggest moon in our Solar System but it is ours and has special meanings for thousands of years for all types of people — warriors, priests, farmers, and many others. And it makes perfect sense to get a Moon Star Tattoo to symbolize our Interstellar connections of the heavens above. It is believed that our Moon was created billions of years ago by the debris from the collision of two planets. The surface of the Moon hasn’t changed much. We are probably seeing the same views of the Moon that the Dinosaurs saw over 65 million years ago! They say we are fortunate to have the stabilizing effect of the Moon’s gravity that prevents our planet from wobbling. That enabled perfect conditions for the numerous forms of life to exist on Earth. Although the Moon is creeping away from us at the rate of about 1.5 inches every year, I think we are OK for now…

In total, only twelve (12) people have actually stepped on the Moon, all Americans. The last was Apollo 17 mission in December 1972. There has been renewed interest to sending someone up to the Moon again but we will see. Despite popular thinking, the Moon is NOT made of Swiss cheese! It is composed of rocks and very few metals. So no mining but perhaps we will build a freeway between the Earth and the Moon. And yes, the Sun is a star. It is the nearest star to our planet. We do take the light and heat for granted and that is because the hydrogen is converted into helium in the Sun’s core. The thermonuclear reaction has been going on for 4.6 billion years. And not to worry – there is still enough hydrogen to maintain the light and heat in the Sun for another 6 Billion years! The core of the Sun is estimated to be 28,000,000 degrees Fahrenheit! That is a lot of zeros…

In short, just think of the Sun and the Stars as a giant nuclear factory.
You wouldn’t know it but five or six centuries ago, scientists have been burnt at the stake for suggesting a heresy that the Sun was simply a star. We have come a long way since then. There are many kinds of Moon Star Tattoos. Some have Stars dangling from the crescent shaped phases of the Moon. Others have many pointed stars with the crescent shaped Moon in the center.

Insight on the Star Tattoo

In the wide variety of tattoo designs, star tattoos for both men and women offer either a symbolic meaning or just a permanent fashion accessory. There are various types of stars excellent for a tattoo design. From the typical five-point star until the nine-point star, you can definitely love those designs. However, choosing the right star tattoo for you counts a lot.
Stars have been part of our lives ever since we were born. From pre-school until adulthood, stars can be a form of a reward, an excellent decoration and even a symbol of hope for every one. Stars can also be a symbol of something evil or of a cult, of power, of truth, of hope and of guidance. The five-point star or as people call it “The Pentagram” can have various forms and various meanings and symbolism. The tattoo can be designed with a circle surrounding the five points, which now becomes a Celtic symbol for magicians and sorcerers who use this star as their protection against the fifth element.
You can also have this star tattoo inverted that now becomes a symbol resembling that of a Ram’s head. Seeing that ram’s head with those coiled horns, who would come to your mind? Of course, the devil has this kind of image in some people. Therefore, if you are planning to have the five-star tattoo or The Pentagram, make sure you know the meaning of each design to avoid being mistaken with your message. The six-point star or the Hexagram connotes a Jewish sign. This signifies something about the relationship of God with humans. In the bible, it’s somewhat a symbol for David, the great king and servant of God, which the term “Shield of David” is coined.
The seven-point star or the Septagram can imply the mystery of the seven-fold system of the Hindu belief. The eight-point star can represent the “Ogdoad” of the Egyptian mythology. These are the eight deities or gods that people worship in the Old Kingdom. The nine-point star or the Nonogram is a symbol related to the nine-fold system especially that of the Taoist belief.
Star tattoo designs, whatever type of star it may be, have made itself attractive in any form. That depends on the artist on how good and artistic he is in adding details. Tattoos are a form of self-expression and identity, and choosing well on the design reveals the real you.

Popular Star Tattoo Designs

Star tattoos are one of the hottest design motifs or themes within the world of tattoo. In fact star tattoos are sought after more then any other type of design. This is based on monthly keyword search volume on the internet so the statistics could be a little off but overall star tattoo designs are incredibly popular.
Please be forewarned just because something is popular especially a certain tattoo design does not mean you should run out and get one. These are the types of tattoos you will regret later in life when they are no longer popular or the in thing. Instead you should always get any permanent tattoo or piercing because you feel a deep connection and the tattoo or piercing holds some significant meaning for you other then it was popular or I saw it on a famous celebrity. I can promise in another 20 years most people won’t remember the celebrity or that star tattoos were popular. This is not meant to discourage you if you were already out activity looking for a star tattoo design or pictures of star tattoos and the like. If you already feel a connection with the star as a tattoo symbol then by all means express yourself and go for it.
So why are star tattoo designs so amazingly popular? There are probably a wide variety of reasons and here are some of the things that customers have told us.
    1. Unisex design – star tattoos are really a unisex design. This means that any type of star tattoo design be it a nautical star, or a starry night tattoo it really doesn’t matter stars are such a universal theme that they will fit well for both sexes.
    2. Bold and Strong – Star tattoo designs are often very bold and strong. The thick lines or solid shapes make a bold tattoo that really stands out and can be seen from a distance.
    3. Variety of Colors – Star tattoo designs can be done in a variety of colors and you are really not limited to anything specific. For example a pink colored star works just as well as a deep blue or a red star tattoo. So you can use a meaningful color scheme that enhances your overall design.
    4. Cheap Designs – another reason they are so popular is star tattoos can often be designed either by hand or even done free hand by the tattoo artist. They are easy to design, change and adapt.
    5. Variety of Sizes – Stars can be done in a wide variety of sizes and tweaked in many different ways to fit the space or location on the body where the person wants the tattoo.
    6. Symbolic Meaning – there are deep meaning behind stars and yet they are sort of up to personal interpretation also.

There is also a large variety of different star types to choose from. For example there is the historic nautical star tattoo that was an important good luck symbol to sailors. There are shooting stars, and star and moon clusters just to name a few of the variations. There are really a lot of different options with start between, size, color, location and type of star the tattoo can have a very different and original feeling.

Magic of Star Tattoos

The nautical star design is one of the oldest and most original of all the star tattoo designs. It is interpreted as a dominant symbol and has a long history. The first use of nautical star tattoos date back to ancient mariners when they used to have them positioned on their body to align with the northern star and from this they could figure out if they were going in the right direction and hence guide them home.

Today the nautical star has been adopted by many groups. The Punk Rocker movement adopted Star tattoos and was originally influenced by Sailor Jerry, who was one of the original and revered tattoo artists of the modern age. Star tattoos are generally connected with masculine groups but the powerful emotions of strength and unity are also very strong among lesbians who have now also adopted the star tattoo and tailored the design to their identity.

The most commonly used star tattoos are the 4 and 5 pointed designs, but also Moon Star Moon designs are also popular and can look more feminine than the nautical star.

The increasing number of people who are having individual star tattoo designs is down to the fact that it us such a versatile shape that can be adapted and incorporated into many ideas. Many people have small ones done in discreet areas like on the wrist which can be hidden by a watch or bracelet. They are also great for covering up an old tattoo that was maybe done badly. Another great idea is to incorporate it into an existing design to enhance or add detail.

Other groups that use the star are the occult or people that practice witchcraft. They use the Pentacle star design which has 5 points and is taken from the Greek word Pentegrammos which means 5 lines. The lines suggest a link to the devil at the points where the lines cross.

But don’t worry, if you still want a 5 pointed star tattoo design without the dark meaning there are plenty of other more light hearted designs out there that can adapted to suit you.

Here are some ideas on combining star tattoos with other designs.

Place the stars in descending sizes on either side of 2 swallows with a heart in the middle. Looks stunning.

Shooting stars but where the stars are replaced with delicate flowers and the flowers are connected by small tendrils that cascade to the left or right. Looks great on the shoulder or hip.

Tribal Tattoos with a pentacle star in the centre. The tribal design is then framed around the star to look like barbed wire.

My favourite is the design that has 5 pentacle stars in a straight line in descending sizes going down the centre of the back.

Star tattoos are a great first tattoo design to get done because they are so adaptable and regardless of their size still have the same powerful meaning.
